Welcome to the Fault Lines Project

This project is a partnership between Mills College, Youth UpRising and KALW-FM, made possible with the generous support of the Vesper Society. This summer, four students - two from Mills and two from Youth UpRising - will collaborate on reports that give voice to the many perspectives around this issue, then generate a discussion across those fault lines to promote community solutions.

I am the coordinator and editor of the project, and I will be the main curator of this site, but it is the students who will be writing and sharing their impressions on this blog, as well as sharing relevant information, articles and studies as they come up during their reporting. They will be conducting interviews with community leaders, the Oakland Police Department, and regular people who have all been touched by violence, and bring back their stories to this blog and to the air waves of KALW 91.7 FM public radio in San Francisco.

We want YOU to participate, this is ultimately an attempt at dialogue, communication and bridging the fault lines that have existed in Oakland around this issue for so many years.  So please feel free to post your comments on this blog, or to call in your reactions, thoughts, and ideas to (415) 264-7106.
